Installing a patio used to mean slapping down a concrete slab and calling it a day. That's no longer the case. Today, more homeowners think of their patios as outdoor rooms for relaxing and entertaining.

If you're planning a new patio, think carefully before starting the project yourself or speaking with a contractor. Consider questions such as:

How big do you want your patio? Lay out your outdoor furniture the way you want it, then design the patio space around it. That way you won't cram your family or guests into inadequate space.

Where should the patio be located? Think about which lot features you want to view or highlight. Do you have an existing pond, wetland, meadow or tree you want to enjoy more? Situate your patio to take the best advantage of your natural landscape.

What look and feel would you like? Do you plan to bask in the sun, surrounded by plants and the tinkling of a water fountain? Or do you prefer the shade? Will you use your patio for entertaining, requiring ample seating and lighting?

Do you have specific materials in mind? Patios can use a variety of materials, from concrete to brick, flagstone slate or tile. What about including a pond or inset garden? Select some options so you can compare plans and costs.

With your preliminary research completed, you should be able to plan the patio you want at the price you can afford.
