Find Prescreened Professionals

The kitchen is the most used room in the house: it's where we cook, eat, entertain, have drinks, and share conversation. So shouldn't we spend just as much time, money, and effort on this popular room as any other space in the house? Yet kitchens are especially complicated to remodel because there is so much going on in them: cabinets, sinks, countertops, appliances, furniture, shelving, etc. Each item in the room requires a different specialty and therefore a different handyman or contractor. However, due to this inconvenience and the high demand of kitchen remodels, many businesses now dedicate themselves specifically to kitchens. Kitchen designers are there to help you make decisions about the space but aren't necessarily there to help build the space for you.

Necessary Advisors
You may ask yourself: Why am I hiring someone who simply plans the space? Why wouldn't I hire someone who can do the actual job as well? Possibly your kitchen designer does have the capabilities to also build from their own blueprints, and if so make sure you create separate contracts for each task they're performing for you. That way you're never obligated to their business. You may simply want their design and wish to go elsewhere for parts and labor. However, may of these interior architects do come with their own design/build company backing them up, which can possibly make it convenient for you to work from only one source.

Be Prepared
Sure your kitchen designer is there to help you make the right choices about your home, but that doesn't mean you can't do your homework. Before hiring have an idea about what you want from your own house. You're making an investment, so don't leave it solely up to the professionals. By reading trade magazines, browsing through catalogues, searching the Internet, going to showrooms, asking the opinion of loved ones, looking at other people's homes, you will finally start getting an idea about what you want. This will make it easier for the professional planner because they no longer have to guess at your likes and dislikes. They will then be able to work from your opinion, turning vague ideas into solid tangibles.

Hiring
You can hire these professionals through many avenues: design/build companies, architectural firms, general contractors, specialty cabinet and countertop makers, or remodeling suppliers. As you can see, kitchen designers can be found in many different fields, but always make sure they are qualified. Look at resumes, browse through portfolios, examine photographs of past projects, and ask for references. You want to make sure that their style matches your own, but you also want to make sure they are reliable. Most companies are happy to share this information, and if they aren't, that should be a red flag right away. Also, if their estimate seems really cheap, it probably means the work will be cheap. And if they tell you that it will only take a few days, maybe a week or two, they're probably lying. This is not to say that they can't do the job quickly and efficiently, but remodels are a complicated business that will take some time. So be ready to be patient. But more than anything, pay attention to the elusive feeling you get from your contractor: Are you comfortable with them? Are they friendly and respectful? Do they seem trustworthy?

All these qualities are important because kitchen remodels are not cheap. Even the initial blueprints itself will probably run you into the hundreds of dollars, much less the more extensive design plans and actual follow-through of the project. You may end up spending several thousand dollars as a minimum, so you have to make sure that you hire an interior architect who knows what they're doing, who won't bail on you, and will complete the project on budget and on time.
