Find Prescreened Professionals

First impressions count for homes as much as they do for people. If your home lacks curb appeal, you can take several steps to spruce it up. And it doesn't have to cost a fortune.

Curb appeal encompasses everything visible from the street in front of your home. Tackling it all could be overwhelming, so consider starting with the following key elements. Improving just one of them could boost the appeal of your entire home.

FRONT DOOR
Doors can be functional and attractive. Many exterior doors come with energy-efficient windows that allow light in without letting hot or cool air escape. Remember to choose an attractive screen or storm door that enhances the entire doorway.

LIGHT FIXTURES
Outdoor lighting that matches the architectural style of your house will accent your entryway. This is especially important for lights that mount to the house or underneath the portico. For landscape lighting, less is often more, as it can detract from your front door.

ACCESSORIES
Don't skimp on small items such as doorbells, doorknockers and house numbers. A handsome brass doorbell sells for as little as $10, and is a far better option than plastic. Same goes for doorknockers, house numbers and mailboxes. Choose accessories and lighting with the same finish.

PAINTING
Examine the front entrance from across the street — would a fresh new color on the front door make for a more inviting focal point? For example, feng shui practitioners recommend painting the front door red — a bold yet harmonious impression to draw visitors into your home. Also make sure your house paint is not peeling or fading, a maintenance issue sure to draw attention.
